Putting the Word into Practice

Today's Scripture: 2 Chronicles 10-12
Read it online at the Bible Gateway: (NIV) (NASB) (KJV) (The Message)

I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. - Ephesians 4:1

Each day we arise from our beds with the opportunity to walk with God or to walk in disobedience. And each day our practice of the fundamentals of Christian living will determine which way we go.

I know a man who has walked closely with God for over fifty years. And every time I'm with him, I feel like I'm in the presence of the Lord Himself. Why is that? Because this man has lived a life of daily obedience to the Word of God, and the Lord has made Himself so real to the man that you can sense God's presence in his life.

I know another man who used to preach a tremendous sermon on the dangers of lust and overfamiliarity with women. But some time ago he walked out on his wife and kids, and today his life is in absolute shambles. I hate to say it, but when I'm with him, I want to poke him in the nose. His problem is not a lack of knowledge--he had one of the best sermons I've ever heard on walking with God and not falling into sin. His problem is that he stopped practicing what he knew.

The Bible urges us this way: "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says" (James 1:22). Progress comes only as we practice the fundamentals in real life.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to abide in Your Word. Amen.

To Ponder

As you interact with people and deal with situations today, ask yourself the question: "What would Jesus do (and say)?"
